What causes low lymphocytes?

Common causes include acute viral infections (paradoxically), HIV, corticosteroid therapy, severe stress, autoimmune conditions, and chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Persistent lymphopenia warrants investigation including HIV testing.

Can high lymphocytes indicate cancer?

Yes. A persistently elevated lymphocyte count (above 5-10 x10 9/L) in an older adult is the characteristic finding of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). Blood film examination and flow cytometry can confirm the diagnosis.

How quickly do lymphocytes recover after chemotherapy?

Lymphocytes are relatively slow to recover after immunosuppressive chemotherapy compared to neutrophils. Full immune reconstitution can take months to years depending on the treatment intensity.

What is the difference between lymphocytes and neutrophils?

Lymphocytes are the immune cells responsible for specific adaptive immunity including antibody production (B cells) and targeted cellular killing (T cells). Neutrophils are the frontline innate immune cells that respond immediately to bacterial infection. Both are reported in the full blood count differential.
